The History of Culture and Arts in the education system and its impact on citizenship

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the situation of the History of Culture and the Arts, especially on the visibility of women artists in secondary education, and its impact on inclusion and citizenship in Portugal. With this objective, we analyzed the main documents issued by the Ministry of Education: the Framework Law of the Education System, the Profile of the Student Leaving Compulsory Education (12th grade) and the Essential Learning for the subject of History of Culture and the Arts in secondary education. We also looked at the textbooks adopted by the disciplinary group.

We realized that in both the 10th and 11th grade textbooks, only 14 women artists were portrayed, most of them in the contemporary period in the European geographical area.

Based on the students' questions and criticisms about the invisibility of women artists, we adopted a teaching practice with research methodologies, scientific sessions with specialists, and research work that would provide a more global vision of the History of Culture and the Arts, integrating women artists from all over the world. We ended with a state-of-the-art on the visibility of women in the arts.

Licenciada em História pela Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa, Mestre e Doutora em História Moderna e Contemporânea pelo ISCTE. É Professora de História e de História da Cultura e das Artes. É investigadora do HTC- História, Territórios e Comunidades, CEF. Tem-se dedicado a investigações na área da História das Mulheres e do Género, nomeadamente no trabalho, associativismo e na arte. Tem participado em congressos e conferências nacionais e internacionais, com livros, artigos e capítulos publicados. 

Paulo Marques Alves, Iscte - Instituto Universitário de Lisboa

Licenciatura, mestrado e doutoramento em Sociologia, pelo ISCTE-IUL. É Professor Auxiliar do ISCTE- Instituto Universitário de Lisboa. É investigador integrado do DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte. Tem participado em diversas investigações nacionais e internacionais, predominantemente sobre temas de sindicalismo, relações laborais e estudos de género. É autor de várias publicações e membro de diversas associações científicas, também integrando redes e sendo membro do conselho editorial de revistas científicas
