Alice Moderno (1867-1946) is a tutelary figure of Azorean culture. A woman beyond her time, the city of Ponta Delgada owes her many of the principles in which modern citizenship is conceived, thanks to her social action at various levels. This article aims to trace the historical profile of this figure as an educator for citizenship, (re)presenting her to the scientific community and to readers in general. Her performance as a teacher, in the last quarter of the nineteenth century and in the first quarter of the twentieth century, and the involvement in various social causes make Alice Moderno a human example of commitment to educational and civilizational development in the city of Ponta Delgada – and in the Azores – to which are combined a personal dedication without limits to the values by which the citizenship that is intended to be developed in the Portuguese educational system is guided.
