From indeterminacy to the reconsideration of cultural mediation: Ecosystem approach to professional practice

Abstract

Although cultural art mediators recognize themselves as making up a specific professional group and, despite their multiple structuring initiatives, recognition of their profession is struggling to occur. However, their presence in artistic and cultural structures is indisputable, as is their role within cultural policies.

Hybrid, the cultural mediation of art knows no single definition, nor stable circumscription of the disciplines it uses. Rather than a (de)limited professional activity, it covers a field of modular, plastic and unlimited professional activities. “Rather than a science, it forms a field of scientificities.1”

Therefore, how can we meet the challenge of establishing boundaries around a specific set of knowledge and skills, even though one of the characteristics of this professional activity is, precisely, to constantly modulate its contours, in depending on the situation? Wouldn’t the essential skill of this profession be precisely this ability to act in between2 ? Looking at the cultural mediation of art as an organic ecosystem augurs a possible recognition of this profession. In addition, it suggests other ways of considering the cultural mediation of art and audiences and, more generally, of considering public policies.

Author Biography

Laure Ciosi, Transverscité - LESA AMU

Depuis plus de vingt ans, Laure Ciosi, sociologue, chercheuse, enseignante et consultante, accompagne les acteurs locaux, nationaux et internationaux des politiques publiques dans leur processus de transformation, d’évaluation et de prise de décision.

Dans le champ culturel spécifiquement, son expertise a, en outre, été sollicitée pour guider d'importants musées nationaux (MUCEM, musée de l’Homme, Palais de Compiègne, Cité de l’architecture et du patrimoine, etc.) et, le Service Interministériel des Archives de France dans l’élaboration de leur Politique des Publics et la structuration de leur Service des Publics. En matière de recherche, elle a notamment accompagné le DEPS du ministère de la Culture et de la Communication à penser la diversification de l’offre des établissements culturels patrimoniaux, elle a conseillé l’Office de Coopération et d’Informations Muséales dans le domaine de la médiation de la CSTI en France, tout comme la Direction de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine sur le champ du patrimoine de l’immigration. Ces recherches se sont par ailleurs déclinées en de nombreuses études des publics.

Dans le domaine de l’enseignement universitaire (2003-2022), Laure Ciosi a été Maître de conférences associé au sein d'Aix-Marseille Université (Licence et Master en Médiation Culturelle des Arts).
