Statement on Ethics and Good Practices

Da Investigação às Práticas is a peer-reviewed academic journal that publishes articles on a wide range of topics, including educational contexts (formal and non-formal), educational actors, teaching and learning processes, models and processes of child development, organisation of education systems, policies, values and practices.

The journal reserves the right to publish only texts that respect fundamental Human Rights and uphold human integrity and dignity.

The journal endorses the principles of ethics and good practices set out in the Code of Conduct and Best Practice Guidelines for Journal Editors of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). The entire editorial board, authors and reviewers are encouraged to become familiar with and disseminate this Code.

Main Responsibilities and Duties of the Editorial Board

  • To contribute to the continuous improvement of the journal;
  • To ensure the quality of published material;
  • To uphold freedom of expression;
  • To decide which articles should be published, guided by the journal’s policies and legal requirements regarding defamation, copyright infringement and plagiarism;
  • To guide authors and reviewers in fulfilling their roles;
  • To inform new members of the editorial board about their duties and current practices;
  • To evaluate manuscripts solely on the basis of their scientific and intellectual merit;
  • To ensure that the peer-review process is anonymous (double-blind peer review), impartial and rigorous, and that all information relating to authors and manuscripts remains confidential;
  • To guarantee the protection of the identity of authors and reviewers throughout the review process;
  • To establish and maintain an up-to-date database of suitable reviewers across the relevant areas;
  • To ensure appropriate selection of reviewers according to the needs of each manuscript;
  • To guarantee that unpublished materials are not used in research conducted by members of the Editorial or Scientific Teams, or in any other context, without the written consent of the authors;
  • To respond to any complaints submitted regarding a manuscript or published article;
  • In cases of suspected misconduct, to follow the COPE flowcharts;
  • To publish corrections, clarifications, retractions and apologies whenever necessary.

 

Good Practices to Be Observed by the Editorial Team

  • To consult authors, readers and the Scientific Board on initiatives and actions that may contribute to the continuous improvement of the journal;
  • To support initiatives that inform and raise awareness within the community regarding the journal’s ethical standards;
  • To encourage responsible behaviour among all members of the community involved and to discourage inappropriate conduct;
  • To ensure that all articles are reviewed by appropriately qualified reviewers;
  • To respect authors’ duly justified requests to exclude specific individuals from reviewing their submitted manuscripts;
  • To alert reviewers to the possible identification of redundant publications and instances of plagiarism, adopting measures to ensure a high level of quality.

 

Responsibilities and Duties of the Journal’s Scientific Board

  • To ensure the peer review of submitted article proposals within their respective areas of expertise. When necessary, the evaluation may be conducted by other reviewers;
  • To establish links with potential reviewers for the scientific peer-review process;
  • To disseminate calls for contributions within their professional networks;
  • To contribute to the promotion and visibility of the Journal;
  • To participate in meetings convened by the Journal’s Editorial Coordination, when applicable.

 

Responsibilities and Duties of Reviewers

  • To contribute to the improvement of the submitted manuscript;
  • To promptly inform the Editorial Team if they do not consider themselves sufficiently qualified to review the submitted manuscript, or if they anticipate being unable to submit their review within the established timeframe;
  • To treat all manuscripts received for review in a strictly confidential manner and not to share or discuss them with others, unless authorised by the Editorial Committee;
  • Not to use information obtained through the peer-review process for personal advantage;
  • To present their assessment in an objective and constructive manner;
  • To identify relevant published works that have not been cited in the manuscript;
  • Not to accept the review if they recognise the identity of the authors through information contained in the text or by any other means;
  • Not to accept the review in the event of conflicts of interest resulting from competition, collaboration or personal or professional relationships with the authors.

 

Responsibilities and Duties of Authors

  • To be familiar with the codes of conduct available at https://publicationethics.org/;
  • To identify as co-authors all individuals who have made a significant contribution to the article, in accordance with the CRediT taxonomy;
  • To acknowledge other contributions to the research in the acknowledgements or contributions section;
  • To ensure that all co-authorship situations are properly included in the manuscript and that the final version of the document is approved by all authors;
  • To ensure that the submission proposal is original and not simultaneously submitted to other national or international journals;
  • To ensure that all citations are properly identified and referenced in accordance with APA Style, 7th Edition;
  • To identify all sources of financial or other forms of support for the research work;
  • Not to submit the same article simultaneously to other journals;
  • To immediately notify the Editorial Committee of any serious errors or inaccuracies identified in the manuscript;
  • In the event of serious errors or plagiarism being identified, published articles will be withdrawn. Prior to withdrawal, the Editorial Coordination will contact the authors to request clarification. In the event of withdrawal, the article will be removed from online databases;
  • To contact the Editorial Team by email in case clarification is required regarding an editorial decision or in the event of complaints.

 

Responsibilities of the Publishing Institution (ESELx)

  • To guarantee the autonomy of the Journal’s Editorial Team;
  • To protect and promote intellectual property, copyright, ethics, good practices and transparency of the journal;
  • To cooperate with the Editorial Coordination in addressing cases of misconduct or fraud.
